Dear Member,

We are deeply saddened to inform you all that Satya N Ray, one of the founders of Prabasi in 1974, has passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 3, 2016.  Over the years, he has served Prabasi as General Secretary, President, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the first NABC hosted by Prabasi in the Bay Area in 1987.   Satya Ray not only helped Prabasi as its leader but also showed his artistic talents by writing, directing and producing plays for Bengali community.  He was also one of the founders of the Prabasi Bangla School and the Jadavpur Alumni Association in the Bay Area.

Our community has lost one of its leaders.  Satya Ray will be missed very dearly.  Our deepest condolence to his family and we pray that his family endures this inevitable loss with strength and peace.

Project Udaan

One of our members, Basudha Mukherjee, is involved in a non-profit project called Project Udaan. The goal is to help the girls to build a better future and come out of the darkness of Sonagachi.

Project Udaan is a pilot project for the Sonagachi red light area in Kolkata, for creating a “Safe Haven” for 50 girls, where they can lead a normal childhood, safe from the real dangers of the flesh trade.

By setting up a “Safe Home” we will demonstrate that such efforts can be very successful. This will encourage other NGOs to also take up this cause and they will be able to reach out to the remaining 1.2 million such needy children across India

Sonagachi, Kolkata, is one of the largest red light areas in Asia. It is an area with several hundred multi-story brothels and estimated 11,000 sex workers & 14,300 children. Approx. 3,400 children are in the age group of 1 – 10 years.

The plan involves building a secure house away from the red light area. Our target age group for the 50 girls to be rescued is 5 – 18 years. We will provide them a safe home, food, clothing, modern education, health care, vocational training & most importantly HOPE

The land is ready. We need people's help, donation, and awareness to make this happen. A separate building will be made where all the vocational training, healthcare will be provided to keep the kids in a safe environment.
