Dear Member,

Dear Member,

The Forum at ICC and Asia Society present
Nobel Laureate Professor Amartya Sen

addressing the 'Demands of Justice in India'

On Wednesday, February 24, 7.00 pm at ICC

Professor Amartya Sen, Professor of Economics and Philosophy, Harvard University
has been called the "conscience of his profession" for his work on famine,
poverty, gender inequality, human development theory, and welfare economics.
He is a distinguished economist-philosopher who won the Nobel Memorial Prize in
Economic Sciences in 1998. From 1998 to 2004 he was Master of Trinity College
at Cambridge University , becoming the first Indian academic to head an Oxbridge
college. He is a trustee of Economists for Peace and Security and former
honorary president of Oxfam. He has received over 80 honorary doctorates and
his books have been translated into more than thirty languages.

Much of Dr. Sen's work reflects his perspective that social justice is more
than a matter of intellectual discourse, and the idea of justice influences
how- and how well- people live. In his latest book, The Idea of Justice,
Dr. Sen offers a powerful critique of mainstream theories of justice. Instead
of focusing on the nature of a perfectly just society, Dr. Sen argues for a
comparative perspective on justice that can guide people in the real choices
that they make.

The Idea of Justice has been chosen as an Economist Best Book of 2009 and a
New Statesman Top Ten Book of the Decade.

Dr. Sen will sign books after the event.
