Dear Member,

19th NORTH AMERICAN BENGALI CONFERENCE FROM JULY 2-4, 1999
==========================================================

This year's North American Bengali Conference is just seven weeks away.
This is an annual gathering of the Bengalis of USA, Canada and Mexico.
The three-day event starting from July 2 will be jam packed with
excitement. Besides the regular 'adda', reunions, and match-making, you will
see stars from Calcutta and other parts of the world all at the same
place performing dance, drama and songs and participating in discussions.

Stars like, Sharmila Tagore, Manna Dey (Adhunik), Madhabi Mukherjee and
Arumay Bannerjee (Natak), Saoli Mitra and party (Natak), Chitresh Das
(dance-drama based on Katthak style), Ashish Khan and Swapan Chowdhury
(Sarod-tabla), Tarun Bhattacharya and Bikram Ghosh (Santoor-tabla),
Lopamudra Mitra (Jeebanmukhi adunik/RabindraSangeet), Ali Akbar Khan
(Classical), Swapan Basu (Lok-geeti), Rejwana Banya Chowdhury, Amar Pal
(Palligeeti), Ramkumar Chatterjee (Purono gan-tappa etc.), Bonani Ghosh
(Rabindrasangeet/Atul prasad/ Dwijendrogeeti, etc), Sikha Basu (Atul
prasadi/ Najrul/ Rabindrasangeet), Mala Ganguly (Adhunik), Kajal Basu
(Adhunik), Dona Roy (Ganguly) [Dance], Pradip Ghosh [Recitation], Mou Sanyal
(comic relief), will be attending, just to name a few*.

We also have two surprise elements, a prominent Bengali adhunik artist
from Calcutta, and a leading Bengali Male Singer from Bombay will be
here to entertain you. The opening ceremony will have mersmerising
illumination by Manick Sorcar.

You certainly cannot let such a grand event go by so easily, especially
when you live in the Bay Area. Registration is easy and takes just two
minutes. Go to

http://www.prabasi.org/Activities/NABC99/Register.html
and register online for the conference. You can pay online with your
credit-card on a secure server. The conference will be held in the Santa
Clara Convention Center which is 10 minutes drive from San Jose
airport. More information about the conference may be found from the
NABC-website

(* the list of performers may change depending on VISA availability)

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NABC REGISTRATION DESK
============================================

The Registration committee desperately needs volunteers for the
three days of NABC. A simple example will clarify what we need -
the registration booths will have to be continuously manned from
4:00 PM to 12:00 AM Friday, 10:00 am - 1:00 am Saturday and
10:00 am - 2:00 PM Sunday. For just one terminal, that is a total of
26 man hours...six terminals, and we are talking of 156 man hours!! This
means that even if each volunteer commits for 2 hours, we need 80
volunteers !!!!

If you are interested in helping out in one of the most vital
functional areas of this year's NABC, please contact Swagato
Basumallick with your responses.

He may be reached at 408-433-4001 or at swgto@lsil.com.

BAISHAKHI FESTIVAL
==================

Because of the ensuing NABC and the huge amount of work it involves, it
has not been possible for us to take a decision on the Baishakhi
festival yet. We will notify you about our decision by the end of May, 1999.

MALICIOUS EMAIL
===============

This is with reference to an email allegedly sent out by someone using
the name Lisa Roy on 5/4/1999.

The mail is a malicious attempt to anonymously defame an individual. We
wish to confirm that PRABASI has NO involvement in the matter. Our
email addresses are kept under tight security and we do not distribute
these addresses to anyone.

The case has been forwarded to the FBI for investigation and is in the
hands of Special Agent Lisa Miller Lenkart. The results of the
investigation would put things in proper perspective.

If you have any information regarding this case you may contact the
investigating officer.
